A small team of dedicated volunteers making a big difference for cats across the Orkney Islands.
Our mission
Orkney Cats is a volunteer-run cat rescue group based in the Orkney Islands, Scotland. We are dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming stray, abandoned and unwanted cats and kittens.
Every cat in our care receives a full vet check, flea and worm treatment, and is neutered where possible before adoption. Our £50 adoption fee includes five weeks of free pet insurance and a neutering voucher if your cat has not yet been neutered.
All adoption applications go through our online form, and the foster carer reviews each one to find the best match. Our charity shop in Stromness is our primary fundraiser, alongside Friends of Orkney Cats subscriptions and donations.
What we do
Rescue & Rehome
We take in stray, abandoned and unwanted cats from across Orkney, nurse them back to health, and find them loving permanent homes with careful matching and home checks.
Trap, Neuter, Return
For feral cat colonies, we carry out humane TNR programmes. This manages the population, prevents suffering, and keeps colony cats healthy where they are most comfortable.
Veterinary Care
Every cat receives a full vet check, flea and worm treatment, and neutering. We work closely with NorthVet and Flett & Carmichael, our local Orkney vets.
Farm Cat Support
We reach out to Orkney’s farming community to help with farm cat colonies, offering advice, neutering support and assistance managing cat populations humanely.
Run entirely by volunteers
Orkney Cats has no paid staff. Every single person involved gives their time freely, fitting cat rescue around their own jobs and families. We are always looking for help in these areas:
- Fostering
Open your home to cats or kittens in need until they find their forever home - Transporting
Help transport cats to vet appointments or foster homes - Helping in the shop
Sort donations, create displays, serve customers at our Stromness shop - Admin & support
Social media management, marketing and administrative tasks - Home visits
Assist with conducting home checks for potential adopters - Photography
Take high-quality photos of the cats to help them get adopted faster
