Volunteer with Us
Orkney Cats is run entirely by volunteers. No matter how much time you can spare, there is a way to help.

Why volunteer?
Every person who gives their time to Orkney Cats makes a direct difference to the lives of cats across the islands. We have no paid staff, so everything we do, from rescuing vulnerable cats to supporting foster homes and finding loving adopters, depends on the kindness and dedication of volunteers
Volunteering is also a chance to be part of a caring local community of people who all want the same thing: safer, happier lives for cats in Orkney. Whether you prefer hands-on help, practical support behind the scenes, or occasional involvement at events, there is a role to suit different skills, schedules and confidence levels.
You do not need special qualifications to get involved. If you care about animal welfare and can offer a little time, we will help you find the right way to contribute. Even a few hours now and then can make a real difference.
Supporting Orkney Cats as a volunteer can also be incredibly rewarding on a personal level. It is a chance to use your time and skills in a meaningful way, meet like-minded people, and know that your help is making a visible difference to cats who need safety, care and a second chance.
Volunteer roles
There are lots of ways to get involved. Choose whatever suits your situation and availability.
Cat Fostering
Open your home to cats or kittens in need until they find their forever family. This is the most vital role we have — without fosterers, we simply cannot take in cats. Food and supplies are provided by Orkney Cats.
Emergency Fostering
Sometimes we need a temporary safe place for a cat at very short notice. Emergency fosterers are on standby for urgent situations — even a few days can save a life.
Transport
Help us get cats to and from vet appointments, foster homes and their new adoptive families. A car and a bit of spare time is all you need.
Home Checks
Visit potential adopters’ homes to make sure they are a safe and suitable environment for one of our cats. A friendly chat and a quick look around — nothing too formal.
Shop Assistant
Help out in our charity shop at 87 Victoria Street, Stromness. Sort donations, set up displays, serve customers and keep the shop running. Shifts to suit your availability.
Fundraising & Events
Help organise events, supermarket fundraising days, bake sales and other activities that raise vital funds. Great if you enjoy being out and about and talking to people.
Admin & Social Media
Support behind the scenes with paperwork, data entry, social media posts and general organisation. Perfect if you want to help from home in your own time.
Trapping & TNR
Assist with humane trapping of stray and feral cats for our Trap, Neuter, Return programme. Training and equipment provided — you just need patience and a steady hand.
How much time do I need?
That is completely up to you. Some of our volunteers give a few hours a week, others help out only occasionally for specific events or emergencies. There is no minimum commitment — anything you can offer is appreciated.
